Bacterial Molecule Target Might Reduce the Need for Antibiotics

Scientists have shown that cellulose serves a mortar-like role to enhance the adhesion of bacteria to bladder cells, causing urinary tract infections. Stanford researchers have shown that bacteria involved in urinary tract infections (UTI) rely on a novel chemical form of the molecule cellulose to stick to bladder cells. The finding, published in the journal of the PNAS could lead to new ways of treating UTIs and other infections without antibiotics.
