Opioid and Antidepressant Use: Risk of Osteoporotic Fractures for RA Patients Increased

Researchers from University of Nebraska Medical Center and the National Data Bank for Rheumatic Diseases researched to show the associations of various medications used by RA patients with osteoporotic (OP) fracture risk. Antidepressants like opioids and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors were associated with increased risk of osteoporotic fractures for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. The research outcomes were published in the 2017 ACR/ARHP Annual Meeting in San Diego.

Gene Associated with Schizophrenia Risk Regulates Early Neurodevelopment

New research led by researchers from Penn State University was published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry.  They reported that a gene linked to schizophrenia risk regulated early neurodevelopment.  This gene played a role in the translation of proteins from RNA and proliferation and migration of neurons in the brain. Thus, understanding its function may help in the development of effective treatment for schizophrenia.
