Determine the Effects of Space Radiation On The CNS

In this study, researchers examined the effects of space radiation on the central nervous system (CNS), ground-based studies in animals have been conducted for more than two decades using charged particle accelerators. Space radiation represents a significant health risk for astronauts. Ground-based animal studies indicate that space radiation affects neuronal functions such as excitability, synaptic transmission, and plasticity, and it may accelerate the onset of Alzheimer’s disease (AD).

Role Of Glycans And Proteins In Human Diseases

Researchers have designed a new method for adorning cells with various glycans and screening interactions between glycans and proteins. Nearly every living cell is studded with branching chains of carbohydrates called glycans. Glycans play diverse roles in shaping how a cell interacts with its environment. The study has published online in Nature Communications.

Eating Fish Linked to Lower MS Risks

A new study from Kaiser Permanente, California shows that eating more fish and taking omega-3 supplements could decrease the risk of multiple sclerosis (MS). The study findings suggest that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish may be associated with lowering the risk of developing MS.

Factors Affecting our Immune System Explored

The Milieu Intérieur Laboratory of Excellence coordinated at the Institut Pasteur by CNRS research director, Dr. Lluis Quintana-Murci, has recently described immune variation on a large scale within the French population. To achieve this, the consortium studied an expansive collection of biological specimens from 1,000 French volunteers aged 20 to 69. This article provides an account of their work.

Patients Head To An Emergency Room Is Pain

In this study, researchers assessed the requirement of emergency rooms for patients. One of the most common reasons patients head to an emergency room is pain. In response, doctors may try something simple at first, like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If that wasn’t effective, the second line of defense has been the big guns.

Microbes Affects Every Aspect Of Our Health

In this study, researchers examined nature versus nurture extends to our microbiome, the personal complement of mostly-friendly bacteria we carry around with us. Study after study has found that our microbiome affects nearly every aspect of our health; and its microbial composition, which varies from individual to individual, may hold the key to everything from weight gain to moods. This study has published in Nature.

Iron Removal: Potential Cancer Therapy

Researchers at Okayama University report in Oncotarget a promising method for targeting cancer stem cells that cause tumor growth and cancer relapse. The approach involves administering molecules that capture iron, an overload of which is known to be a potential cause of cancer.
