Asthma: Effectiveness of Single Steroid-Bronchodilator Treatment

When it comes to treating teens and adults with persistent asthma, using a single corticosteroid and long-acting bronchodilator treatment for both daily asthma control and for rescue relief during sudden asthma attacks is more effective than taking separate medications for daily control and rescue, according to an analysis led by University of Connecticut researchers. The findings appear in the Journal of the American Medical Association

Astronauts Are Affected By Space Radiation

A new study recommends that NASA should update its radiation guidelines for astronauts because there is now more accurate data about how space affects the human body. Using an instrument on NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter called CRaTER, its team found that rates of a certain kind of radiation in space are even higher than they previously predicted. This could pose a possible health risk for future voyages to the moon or Mars.

PET-CT Not Better for Monitoring CRC Patients

According to a new multicenter randomized trial from France, in monitoring colorectal cancer (CRC) patients after curative-intent surgery, the use of more sophisticated and sensitive imaging does not decrease subsequent failure rates compared to use of older technology. The study was published online in the Annals of Oncology.

Enzymes To Trigger Onset Of Kidney Disease

A new study including the onset of kidney disease in a major marker for kidney disease development. Scientists have discovered nano-sized 'shuttles,' which transport a damaging enzyme outside of the kidney cells for it to begin the scarring process on the surface. The study is hoped that it could lead to new therapies to try to block the tiny microvesicles about 100 nanometers in diameter and potentially stop the disease in its tracks. The study was published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
