Polio Virus: A Single-Injection Vaccine Introduced

A new nanoparticle vaccine developed by MIT researchers could assist efforts to eradicate polio worldwide. The vaccine, which delivers multiple doses in just one injection, could make it easier to immunize children in remote regions of Pakistan and other countries where the disease is still found.

Age-Related Racial Disparities In Suicide Rates Among U.S. Youth

A new study suggests the suicide rate is roughly two times higher for black children ages 5-12 compared with white children of the same age group. Suicide is a major public health problem and a leading cause of death in the United States. While suicide among young children is quite rare, it can be devastating to families, friends, and communities. Past patterns of national youth suicide rates revealed higher rates for white compared to black youth.

Outbreak of Nipah virus in Kerala

At least nine individuals have died due to the deadly Nipah virus in Kerala, India. Over 25 have been infected with this virus in the outbreak say official sources. Nipah virus is a deadly virus that spread rapidly among populations and has a death rate of between 40 to 75% infected individuals in previous outbreaks. Nipah is a newly emerged deadly virus that is typically hosted naturally by fruit bats and there is at present no cure or vaccine against this infection.
