Genes Associated With Infantile Forms Of Schizophrenia Identified

Scientists have identified novel genes associated with a specific form of schizophrenia. Schizophrenia is a major psychiatric illness affecting one percent of the population worldwide. Patients suffering from schizophrenia present delusions, hallucinations, abnormal behavior, impairment in daily life and cognitive deficits. Current treatments are insufficient in addressing all of these symptoms.

Relationship Between Muscle Weakening And Aging

Scientists have now identified what triggers such changes. Age-related changes in the peripheral nerves can drastically reduce the quality of life. The average life expectancy is at an all-time high and rising. This is associated with an increase in age-related diseases of the nervous system such as Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. However, such pathological degenerations do not only affect the brain.

Progressive muscle weakness

Although the consequences of age-related peripheral nerve degeneration have a massive impact on the quality of life in old age as well as for the economy, its causes have not yet been investigated systematically. The peripheral nervous system, which is responsible e.g. for muscle and skin innervation, also has an increased risk of degenerating as they age.
