In this work we present a methodology able to use harmonized PET/CT imaging in dose painting by number (DPBN) approach by means of a robust and accurate treatment planning system. Image processing and treatment planning were performed by using a Matlab-based platform, called CARMEN, in which a full Monte Carlo simulation is included.
Repeatedly missing general practice (GP) appointments may be a risk marker for all-cause mortality, particularly in patients with mental health conditions, new research published in the open access journal BMC Medicine suggests.
The proposed reimbursement changes, outlined in the newest issue of Health Affairs , greatly expand the scope of services offered to patients and even provide residual benefit to caregivers. Through these changes, quality of life for patients could be improved, relocations to nursing homes can be delayed, and caregivers' stress can be significantly reduced.
The evidence is growing that pill testing encourages young people to reconsider their drug use—and new forms of testing can provide even more benefits. In 2014, I wrote an article for The Conversation outlining six reasons why Australia should pilot pill testing. Those reasons included:
Researchers from the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven have succeeded in non-invasively measuring the elasticity and estimating the stresses in the human abdominal aorta using 3-D ultrasound.
With youth winter sports in full swing, it's important for coaches and parents to know the signs of a concussion, a sports medicine doctor advises. "Because concussion affects affect thinking," said Dr. Kathryn Gloyer, a primary sports medicine physician with Penn State Health in State College, Pa.
The growing prevalence of obesity among Americans may be adversely affecting the health of physicians by exposing them to greater amounts of radiation during coronary angiography, new research suggests.
A study published in The FASEB Journal demonstrated that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (or fish oils) reduced the rate at which young women lost muscle mass during a period of immobilization.
Our DNA is under constant attack. The delicate molecule that contains our genetic information is extremely vulnerable to everything from environmental agents, such as radiation, to the chemicals in the air we breathe and the food we eat. Genome instability can lead to genetic disorders, chronic diseases and a predisposition to cancer.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) tablets are associated with a higher risk of rare but serious blood clots (known as venous thromboembolism or VTE), finds a large study in The BMJ today.
The prevalence of overlap syndrome in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Medicare beneficiaries increased 4-fold from 2004 to 2013, according to a study published in Annals of the American Thoracic Society.
Scientists have created the first retroviral CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing library to explore the regulation of mouse T cells, which are key cells in the immune system. Researchers from the Wellcome Sanger Institute and their collaborators have mapped the most important genes for controlling T helper cells and identified several new regulatory genes.
