Applications Of Bioactive Peptide

Bioactive peptides are small protein fragments that promote metabolic health by exerting a positive influence on biological responses within the body. The therapeutic applications of these novel molecules include, but are not limited to, anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and anti-viral activities. They have also been used to treat metabolic disorders, such as Type-2 diabetes and obesity.

Cryo EM Reveals The Molecular Structure Of Blood Cells

Researchers used Cryo-Electron Microscopy (Cryo-EM) to expose the molecular structures the parasite uses to latch on to young red blood cells, precisely indicating the exact shape required for an antibody to bind to and stop the parasite from entering.

An antibody is a protein produced by infection-fighting white blood B cells to help them attack specific pathogens, and one tailored to keep the parasite out of our red blood cells could be the basis an effective vaccine or drug. The study was published in Nature.

Patient's With Terminal Illness Need Hospice Care

According to a study, researchers examined about 6,000 people with life-limiting and terminal illnesses do not receive the expert care they could benefit from each year. This amounts to nearly a quarter of all those who need care but provision across Wales is variable. It said a shortage of medical staff meant people can miss out on care at home or in the community. The Welsh Government welcomed the cross-party report but "strongly" refuted the number of people affected.

New Critical Care Unit Treats Neurotrauma

A researcher working out the puzzles of brain trauma, looking for advances that could reduce neurological damage after injury, seizures, hemorrhages, strokes or other events. From the advent of “clot-busting” drug TPA, which first had to be given within three hours of a stroke and now can be successfully given up to six hours later in some circumstances, to a standard of care that changed just weeks ago, using a catheter to pull a blood clot out the brain of some stroke patients up to 24 hours after the stroke, Langdon has seen innovation dramatically change outcomes in neuro patients.

Emergency Exit System For Human Spacflight

India is one step closer to launching people to space.  On the night of July 4 (the morning of July 5 local Indian time), the nation performed the first of a series of trials designed to qualify a crew-escape system, which would get astronauts to safety during a launch emergency.

People With Hearing Loss Understand Speech By Technology

Researcher uses machine learning to teach a computer program how to remove unwanted noise and enhance speech. Future hearing aid users will be able to target their listening more accurately thanks to new Danish technology.

One of the main challenges for people with hearing loss is understanding speech in noisy surroundings. The problem is referred to as the cocktail party effect because situations where many people are talking at the same time often make it very hard to distinguish what is being said by the individual you are talking to.

Severe Chronic Plaque Psoriasis Treated With Tildrakizumab

A study recommends in favor of the interleukin (IL)-23 inhibitor tildrakizumab (Ilumetri, Almirall SA) for treatment of adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis who are candidates for systemic therapy.

Tildrakizumab reduces the immune response and inflammatory process, leading to improvement in the signs and symptoms of plaque psoriasis, the EMA says in a press statement. The most common side effects are upper respiratory tract infections, gastroenteritis, nausea, diarrhea, headache, injection site pain, and back pain.
