Human Dendritic Cell ER Stress Response Reduces T cell Alloreactivity

Acute graft- vs. host disease (GVHD) is an important cause of morbidity and death after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). We identify a new approach to prevent GVHD that impairs monocyte-derived dendritic cell (moDC) alloactivation of T cells, yet preserves graft- vs.-leukemia (GVL). Exceeding endoplasmic reticulum (ER) capacity results in a spliced form of X-box binding protein-1 (XBP-1s).

Social Worker Intervention On Hospital Use For Patients

Long-stay patients in acute hospitals commonly present with complex psychosocial needs and use high levels of hospital resources. To determine whether a specialist social worker-led model of care was associated with a reduction in length of stay for medically stable patients with complex psychosocial needs who were at risk of a long stay, and to determine the economic value of this model relative to the decision makers' willingness to pay for bed days released.

Geriatric Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease

Compared to younger individuals, the prevalence of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in elders is notably higher. While renal replacement therapy, usually with hemodialysis, is accepted therapy in younger patients with ESRD, decisions regarding the treatment of advanced kidney disease in the elderly population are more complex, secondary to the physiologic changes of aging, concurrent geriatric syndromes, and varying goals of care.
