In this work, researchers quantified the variation of significant retinal blood vessel (BV) position outside optic nerve head (ONH) among glaucoma patients. More specifically, they investigated quantitative relationships between BV position and glaucoma diagnostic parameters
Recurrent acute otitis media (rAOM, recurrent ear infection) is a common childhood disease caused by bacteria termed otopathogens, for which current treatments have limited effectiveness. Generic probiotic therapies have shown promise, but seem to lack specificity. They hypothesized that healthy children with no history of AOM carry protective commensal bacteria that could be translated into a specific probiotic therapy to break the cycle of re-infection.
Neonatal nephron loss may follow hypoxic-ischemic events or nephrotoxic medications. Its long-term effects on the kidney are still unclear. Unlike term infants, preterm neonates less than 36 weeks gestational age show ongoing nephrogenesis. We hypothesized that nephron loss during nephrogenesis leads to more severe renal sequelae than nephron loss shortly after the completion of nephrogenesis.
In this study, approximately 80% of patients presenting to emergency departments (ED) with chest pain do not have any true cardiopulmonary emergency such as acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, psychological contributors such as anxiety are thought to be present in up to 58%, but often remain undiagnosed leading to chronic chest pain and ED recidivism.
Stable posture and body movement in humans are dictated by the precise functioning of the ampulla organs in the semi-circular canals. Statistical analysis of the interrelationship between bony and membranous compartments within the semi-circular canals is dependent on the visualization of soft tissue structures. Thirty-one human inner ears were prepared, post-fixed with osmium tetroxide and decalcified for soft tissue contrast enhancement.
Three new polyoxygenated steroids, michosterols A– C, and four known compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract of the soft coral Lobophytum michaelae, collected off the coast of Taitung. It exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity.
Vascular endothelial growth factor-C, a lymphangiogenic growth factor results in cell proliferation and survival. The interruption of VEGF-C signaling might be a potential therapeutic target for antileukemic treatment in AML patients.
In an observational study of patients who received ledipasvir and sofosbuvir treatment for HCV, it was found that contrary to guidelines, 8 and 12-week treatment regimens did not result in statistically significant differences in SVR12 in black patients.
In this study, researchers assessed that the Congo nation is suffering from a cholera outbreak that has swept through villages ravaged by conflict and is now spreading quickly in the overcrowded capital, officials and health workers. Cholera outbreaks occur regularly in the vast Central African country, but this is the worst in more than 20 years.
According to a study, researchers examine that women who take hormone replacement therapy (HRT) during menopause appear to have changes in heart structure and function that may be associated with a lower risk of heart disease. The study was published in PLOS One.
A new study described that chemical peels can be a safe treatment option for people with darker skin. They show less than four percent of people with darker skin experienced unwanted side effects from a chemical peel. The study was published online in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology.
A new study published in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases, demonstrates that switching from adalimumab to the biosimilar adalimumab-adbm had no impact on efficacy, safety, or immunogenicity, in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
