Researchers have investigated the association of clinical variables and quality of care measures with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR +) and albuminuria (Alb +) in 157,595 T2DM individuals participating to the Italian Association of Clinical Diabetologists ( AMD ) Annals Initiative, stratified by age.
Each year in the U.S. some 200,000 babies, struggling to survive their early days in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), require umbilical cord catheters to take food and medicine. While these tiny tubes serve as a lifeline, they can also be a conduit for harmful bacteria to enter the bloodstream. The resulting infection, which affects roughly one in five babies with an umbilical cord catheter, means a longer and more expensive hospital stay and a significantly increased risk of developmental delays, or even death.
Using previous research that shows that insomnia causes a decrease in blood flow in the front dorsal lobe of the brain, and correlates it with depression, the authors of a Japanese study recently published in the journal Open Medicine entitled 'Insomnia and depression: Japanese hospital workers questionnaire survey' seeks to establish a link between insomnia and depression.
Scientists have successfully produced human kidney tissue within a living organism which is able to produce urine, a first for medical science. The discovery, published in Stem Cell Reports , signifies a significant milestone in the development of treatment for kidney disease.
Patients who are obese and experience knee pain were found to have improved blood pressure at the patella and the wrist after weight loss associated with bariatric surgery vs medical management in a study published in Arthritis Care & Research . This finding suggests that bariatric surgery may result in improved central pain sensitization .
The escalating threat of a nuclear potential between North Korea and the United States has led the Department of Defense (DoD) to join hands with a clutch of companies in developing more effective medical treatments for acute radiation syndrome .
Researchers reported at Americas Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis that Ublituximab is a novel glycol-engineered anti-CD20 antibody, demonstrated rapid and robust B cell depletion, a profound reduction in gadolinium (Gd)-enhancing lesions, and clinical stability at week 24 in a phase 2a study of patients with relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS).
In this study, researchers have established a new method for improving T cell manufacture by focusing on the materials involved in this process. Their study uses a polymer mesh to activate the T cells, a critical step for their production. This approach simplifies processing compared to systems in use today. In addition, making the fibers out of a mechanically soft material improved T cell growth, outperforming the current gold standard on several fronts. The study is published in Advanced Biosystems.
In this study, researchers examined the effect of left lateral tilting on maternal hemodynamics after SAB. Post-spinal hypotension is a common maternal complication during cesarean delivery. Aortocaval compression by the gravid uterus has been assumed as a precipitating factor for post-spinal hypotension. The role of left lateral tilting position in improving maternal cardiac output after subarachnoid block (SAB) is unclear.
In a study published in American Journal of Kidney Diseases, the researchers from Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, performed advanced quantitative structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to determine whether chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects brain structure and whether poorer neurocognitive performance in CKD is associated with structural brain differences.
According to a new study has shown that 11.11% Australian patients who were hospitalized suffered from one or the other hospital-acquired complication. These complications are usually of a preventable nature and occur when there is a deficiency in patient care.
Researchers from Turkey report, Patients with fibromyalgia have increased eye sensitivity and pain. The study findings were published by researchers, Dr. V. Aykut of Istanbul Medeniyet University School of Medicine and colleagues in the journal Eye.
