Biofilm formation plays a critical role in antimicrobial resistance in Staphylococcus aureus . In a new study, the researchers investigated the potential of crude extracts of 79 Micronesian marine microorganisms to inhibit S. aureus biofilm formation. The results showed that an extract of Streptomyces sp. MC025 inhibited Staphylococcus aureus biofilm formation.
Researchers established a link between inflammation and a common cellular process, autophagy , which could treat better or even prevent diseases of the gut (colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis). The results published in the journal Nature Communications.

You are what you eat when it comes to fat, report scientists from McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) in the journal Science Advances.
A new study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry has shown that the enzyme that makes the El Tor family of Vibrio cholerae resistant to those antibiotics has a different mechanism of action from any comparable proteins observed in bacteria so far. Understanding that mechanism better equips researchers to overcome the challenge it presents in a world with increasing antibiotic resistance.
Exposure to the children's television series Peppa Pig may be contributing to unrealistic expectations of primary care and encouraging inappropriate use of services suggests a doctor in the Christmas issue of The BMJ.
Benzodiazepine and related drug use is associated to a 40% increase in mortality among persons with Alzheimer's disease , according to a study from the University of Eastern Finland. The study findings were published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry .
Applying new math, Kristina Crona, an American University assistant professor who researches in the area of mathematical biology, and her colleagues show how ranking pathogen mutants can help scientists understand how mutants evolve to resist drug treatments. This line of research could have implications for the treatment of diseases that can resist drug treatments, such as HIV and malaria.
A ground-breaking new research hub has been set up to help halt future outbreaks of killer diseases like Ebola and Zika. The landmark project will help to increase vaccine coverage across the globe and improve the response to deadly outbreaks through the rapid deployment of life-saving vaccines.
Community screening for osteoporosis could prevent more than a quarter of hip fractures in older women, according to a study published in the journal The Lancet. The study has shown that a simple questionnaire, combined with bone mineral density measurements for some, would help identify those at risk of hip fracture.
Researchers at Johns Hopkins Medicine report they have identified rare genetic variations in a protein called Thorase, which is responsible for breaking down receptors at the connections between neurons in the brain. By targeting Thorase's function, the scientists say they have successfully reversed anti-social behavior in mice genetically modified to carry the variants by using the anti-epilepsy drug perampanel.
Expressing concern over rising number of abortion-related deaths in the country, a parliamentary committee on women's healthcare policies has recommended amendment in Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act to help remove the weak spots in existing norms.
